Where to park: The easiest place to park is at the MST trailhead parking on NC128, which is the entrance road to get to Mount Mitchell.

The hike: The Right Hand Prong of the South Toe River ain’t much this high up, and the waterfall we saw ain’t much. The most direct route to the falls is to walk the entrance road back toward the Blue Ridge Parkway for about a quarter of a mile and drop off the left side of the road. It’s really steep, rocky, and overgrown. I don’t have any landmarks to give you. If you stay perpendicular to the road and veer just a tad to your right, you will hit the creek very close to the falls. You can climb out the same way or go up the other side to the Buncombe Horse Trail and hike that back to your car. This isn’t a hike where I can give you much more than where it is, where I started, and where we went down to the creek.
